Köpenick is a district in the Treptow-Köpenick borough in the southeast of Berlin, located at the confluence of the Spree and Dahme rivers, in a forested and lake-rich area. Like Spandau, located on the western edge of Berlin, Köpenick has an independent medieval town tradition. Both areas originated from Slavic fortifications, were granted city rights in the Middle Ages, and still have well-preserved old town centers and their own suburbs.
